Hout Bay
Hout Bay was named by the Dutch explorers who discovered the wooded valley and the name literally means “wood bay”. Jan van Riebeeck described Hout Bay as having the most beautiful forests he had ever seen.
The bay and nearby Duiker Island are renowned for their wildlife in particular sea birds and Fur Seals.
For great views of the bay and the seals take a pleasure cruise to the Island, (also called Seal Island) where there is a large seal colony. The colony is located beneath the well known Sentinel Mountain where you can view thousands of Cape Fur Seals in their natural environment.
In the past these inquisitive animals were extensively hunted for their skins, meat and oil but happily these day they are well protected under the Seals and Seabird Protection Act.
After your excursion you are encouraged to enjoy some of the freshest seafood at the bay’s Mariner’s Wharf.
